"Based On True Events" is a debut album created by Israeli project called Attoya, in which line-up we have Alex and Leonid Burshtein. The CD released in Dutch label Trishula Records must present dark psytrance and this kind of sounds we can find in "Based On True Events".

The album's tempo oscillate in borders of 148-150 BPM, but the last two tracks increase the pace to 155 BPM. Atmosphere here is quite diversity as for dark psytrance. We can find here a horror (everywhere), but also something more subtle: atmosphere of haunted forest ("Above Natural Sleep"), gothic ("The Reflection Of Awry Mirrors"), deranged ("Green Crop Matured", "Color Shades"), we have here also quite a lot of alien, industrial and infernal moments. This is for sure a big good point of the album.

On the second side of the scale we have the faults - the melodies that aren't absorbing; but they must be justly divided in two groups. We have a lot of short melodies that rather supplement the atmosphere - and they are good, but the melodies that are "main" motives - are the nasty element of the whole CD, because they are too chaotic. But I want to mark: the melodies' distribution into "background" and "foreground" is maybe too subjective. But beyond a shadow of a doubt, Attoya is focusing on other details and above all: on building the atmosphere.

Undoubtedly, a universal plus of the tracks are their intros in which we have dark ambient. But not very good is the scheme after them: after the intro of the composition too quick we have a change to the standard of a kick, bass and some additional sound - these are the only moments when the atmosphere unpleasantly break off. The titled track - "Based On True Events" - show in the perfect way, how the introduction should look: they should simply go through smoothly and morphing to the main phaze. Good point for Attoya is also that all samples have their specific and are nicely linked to the arrangement of the rhythm. Many, many samples we have here and they cause that the CD isn't boring.

Attoya found a compromise between the old and the new style of dark psytrance. We can hear sounds similiar to Dark Soho (gothic) and swish at the same time with the whole construction typical for present style. The album was done on a good level of dark psytrance, but if someone don't like this course then after hearing "Based On True Events" won't change the mind.
